Freestyle Book Club—Music Biographies

The Freestyle Book Club is a partnership with Tin Whiskers Brewing Co. and SubText Bookstore.

On the last Tuesday of every month at 7pm, June 28th this month, we host, in our taproom, the Freestyle Book Club. The Book Club is led by Matt Keliher, the bibliotherapist over at SubText. This is a gathering of individuals who share their perspectives on the chosen book club theme. The Freestyle Book Club is a relaxed gathering. You can read from the list of suggestions, or choose a book on your own that fits the theme, and join us on the night of the event to share your perspective. We’d love to hear about what you read! The theme for the month of June is Music Biographies, and the suggested readings are as follows

Matt’s Pick—Kill ‘Em and Leave: Searching for James Brown and the American Soul by James McBride. James McBride is the New York Times Bestselling author of books such as The Color of Water and The Good Lord Bird. He is a tremendously talented writer and Kill ‘Em and Leave is a powerful exposé on both history James Brown the musician, and the disparaging treatment James Brown the man received by the hands of the patriarchy in the American South. This is as much a music biography as it is a story of how institutional racism and prejudice left a lasting impact on the legacy of The Godfather of Soul.

Other suggestions:
The Sun & The Moon & The Rolling Stones by Rich Cohen—the history of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger, and James Brown are intimately tied together after their shared stage performance at T.A.M.I. This history would complement my choice nicely.

Life by Keith Richards
Last Train to Memphis: The Rise of Elvis Presley by Peter Guralnick
Dylan Goes Electric by Elijah Wald
M Train or Just Kids by Patti Smith
The Smith Tapes: Lost Interviews with Rock Stars & Legends by Ezra Bookstein
It’s a Long Story: My Life by Willie Nelson

Or really, anything about music or musicians. If you stop into SubText, and throw a dart at one of the walls (please don’t throw darts in the bookstore, there are usually people in there!) you’ll hit a music biography in the spine. Finally, if you purchase the your book choice at SubText and mention the Freestyle Book Club with Tin Whiskers, you'll receive 10% off your purchase.

Drink Local. Read Local. See you on the 28th.
