In the last week and a half, my identiy and values have been shaken to their very core. This election has left me feeling helpless and impotent beyond anything I've ever felt before. And, in the last week, countless others have wandered into the bookstore expressing similar disbelief. The only solution to combating this helpless nauseated feeling is to become active.
For too long, I have been a passive bystander in the political arena. Lodging complaint after argument after complaint. I've never taken an active role. Whether out of apathy, fear, or a general belief that my voice didn't matter. These are no longer good enough reasons to remain silent. They never were to begin with. Silence is violence when the very fabric of the social qualities we demand our government represent are under attack. It is up to us all to stand and defend the values we believe in. Things like racial equity and equality, gender equality, safety for our refugee and immigrant communities, equal rights for our LGBT brothers and sisters, economic justice against the powerful interests that threaten both our democracy and our environment. These values deserve our best efforts in their defense. And we are stronger together.
I, like I assume many of my peers, haven't a clue as to how to go about this, this political activity. But I am willing to learn, and that willingness is the first step in a life-long marathon. Because while the current situation demands this from us, it will be no different 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Our voices must be heard. We must not remain silent. We must act. Don't agonize. Organize.
