Ilze Mueller presents a new translation of The Annele Trilogy

The Annele trilogy is the semi-autobiographical story of young Annele growing up in the part of czarist Russia that is now Latvia, during the 1860s and '70s. The protagonist is thus a contemporary of Laura of Little House on the Prairie fame. Duluth writer Barton Sutter calls this "the most astonishing literary creation of kid consciousness" he's ever read.

The child of poor farm workers, Annele explores the natural world, sharply and often humorously observes the people around her, at first on the farms where she and her parents live and work, and later in the provincial town where she has to start making her living at age 13 when her father dies. A portrait of the artist as a young girl, this "book for young and old" brings to life a time and place most American's are not familiar with.

Ilze Klavina Mueller, who emigrated from Latvia during World War II, lives in Minneapolis. Her poetry reflects her range of languages and cultures and her interest in travel. She divides her time between translation and poetry. Her poems have appeared in Looking For Home: Women Writing About Exile, CALYX, Water~Stone, 100 Words, Hedgebrook Journal, and Deeper Than You Think.
